Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick, who don’t know the two big names after The Shining is a movie with a classic psychological horror movie that is very successful and mandatory to watch. This film is an adaptation of a novel entitled same from the mystery of Stephen King, successfully translated perfectly by Stanley Kubrick who is not half worked in this film. Stanley Kubrick is one of the most legendary directors who will be memorable from his movies, even other directors follow his stunning cinematography technique.

“The Shining,” tells about Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) who just got a new job as a caretaker at a luxury hotel located in the mountains of Rocky Mountain, Colorado during the winter. Previously, there had been a massacre that happened inside that hotel 5 years ago and later, Jack and his wife Wendy Torrance (Shelley Duvall) and his son Danny (Danny Lloyd) who will stay alone for 5 months at the hotel. Strange events popping up when Danny who turned out to have a capability called ‘The Shining’ began to see the terrible sightings that made him very frightened. Jack begins to graduate slowly by the evil supernatural power and drive him mad.

After an exhausting filming with a script that often alternated all of a sudden, this film makes all of the actors paid satisfied after seeing the results of this film. A horror with a thick psychological element and tremendous tension can really be a must-watch movie. The terrifying memorable classical music that been the opening act of this film, with the atmosphere inside the hotel makes it all horrible and thrilling to watch. The camera moves that very smooth and dynamic makes The Shining is the best horror movie ever.

Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance does have a very serious expression and make this movie will always be remembered every audience. Jack Nicholson displays a fierce expression that sometimes also appears for a moment’s cute and crazy expressions. Shelley Duvall who is called a tortured actress throughout the filmmaking to perform optimally. The pressures of Stanley Kubrick demanded him to be a perfect actor who turned out to be able to make Duvall an actress that same as Nicholson, even though Kubrick’s way of suppressing her was wrong.


Overall, The Shining is the best horror movie that is required to watch among horror movie lovers or not. With the psychological elements of the merging between Kubrick and King, it makes the all of the audience very difficult to sleep after watching it.
