Bridge Of Spies is a historical drama movie directed by Steven Spielberg. Who doesn’t know Steven Spielberg? A well-directed man who made famous movies such as Jurassic Park trilogy, Indiana Jones trilogy, Saving Private Ryan, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and etc. The movie starring Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance who won an Oscar award in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Bridge Of Spies is also one of the underrated movies by Steven Spielberg I think because this movie is also infrequently known by anyone especially if this movie has a history and thriller genre in it. Not to mention, talking movie like this is so boring at all. But, that’s for some people because this movie isn’t a regular talking movie. Although almost every scene is just talking, it never bore me and also this movie is a biography. So, I have no problem with this movie but Steven Spielberg can be a well-directed who cannot be underestimated anymore.

“Bridge Of Spies,” tells about 1957 in Brooklyn where a Russian spy named Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) picked up a secret message from a park bench and read it before the FBI agent stormed into his apartment room. He did manage to hide the secret message but he was carried into the upshot of his arrest and prosecution. Then, a lawyer named James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks) was asked to make Rudolf Abel his legal client. Donovan was asked to be able to handle Abel as well so Abel would cooperate with the US government so that his demands could be reduced. However, Abel refused guilty to cooperate with the United States which ultimately threatened the death execution. After Donovan finished with his duties, Donovan just continued his defense of Abel because according to Donovan, there is a human side within Abel because he is a loyal soldier to his country. Donovan assumes that Abel deserves respect even though Abel is the enemy of the United States. Donovan proposed to the trial that Abel’s death sentence be replaced by a prisoner’s custody if a US spy was detained by the Soviet, the two countries could exchange spies. The judge agreed with the proposal but all citizens of the United States were angry with that proposal. Donovan also became a scapegoat because the court’s decision and his family got a terror because of the hatred of Americans against him. After a long time when the case was over, the incident that predicted Donovan happens. A US spy pilot named Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) was shot down after taking pictures of Soviet using airspace. Donovan finally wanted to do whatever it took to recover his name but at the same time, another American named Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers) was arrested for being on the wrong side of the wall when the Berlin wall was built. This is the impediment how Donovan can save both.

Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, and Billy Magnussen in Bridge of Spies (2015)

Steven Spielberg is always able to present a movie that’s never boring to watch. Especially if the story told about a cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union. However, Bridge Of Spies is not a war movie like Saving Private Ryan where there are so many corpse bodies and blood everywhere. While watching this movie for 2 hours and 20 minutes, you will only see the talking scene, a talking, and a talking. However, the talking scene in here is somehow very tense and not boring. This movie is a pure drama, not a war movie like a battle everywhere, or a gunshot with a bomb blast. There is no a great action in it while watching this movie because you will feel bored when watching this movie in the cinema. This movie is also one of the films where Steven Spielberg recalls his favorite actor Tom Hanks after Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal and the recently released biography movie’s The Post. Although this movie is a pure drama, this film is not a drama movie that will drain the tears even though some of the scenes I’m also touched let alone the ending when I watch this movie. You will see a side of humanity, a kinship, holding its own principles, until the struggle.

Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, and Billy Magnussen

For the actors, Mark Rylance is the most dominant actor in this movie. No one knows if he won an Oscar in this film. Rudolf Abel’s character is very cool, plain, quiet, and authoritative. Although if we compare to Tom Hanks that most often appears, Mark Rylance can be said is an actor that I can’t guess at all. He can indeed be an enemy of the United States but there is a magical impact that makes me feel pity about his character because he is not an unworthy person to receive the death execution even though he is a spy. Tom Hanks who plays James B. Donovan can be said to be a very good actor because I often guess what kind of character Tom Hanks is in every movie. He is a soft, friendly, and sometimes a funny person. But in this movie, Tom Hanks is able to bring his character simultaneously with his firm acts, not arrogant, a loving person, and fighting for his country. Austin Stowell, although he is the core of the story, I don’t see the advantages in him. The characters that are played also seem to be so easily forgotten that I don’t notice during watching this movie. But I like the scene where a plane with its stunning CGI effects. Not to mention, this is the best scene I’ve ever seen in this movie. Bridge Of Spies is a film that takes historical stories that are not boring and refers to the principle of humanity. Although the duration is quite a long, this movie also added a lot of light humor between the scene of its tension between government and politics as if we see a superpower country face each other and it makes me feel tense.

Overall, Bridge Of Spies is a biography movie with a history that will not feel bored while some people may feel bored sometimes. Although the plot of it story seems rather slow, I also didn’t expect to see if there is a plot-twist at the end of the movie. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks is a merger of two legends who are able to present a movie that is unmatchable. Mark Rylance also I think it’s worth to get an Oscar award in this movie. Steven Spielberg is a well-directed man who can execute every scene by his cinematography.
