Iconoclasts” took a lot of inspiration especially on the Metroidvania genre since “Metroid” and “Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest.” Other than “Iconoclasts,” genre like this become one of the most unique, especially for the indie gamers’ community. As a person who really loves retro classic games with 16-bit graphics, it’s not many communities, especially young gamers who like this type of games. What’s more, it’s all about graphics, graphics, and graphics. Nowadays, it seems that gamers run away from this aspect, so even though it’s not playable, they care a lot to graphic itself. In any way, I can say that “Iconoclasts” is a perfect game, taking Metroidvania back to a much higher level, and gave a modern story yet interesting. Since the game was developed in 2010 by Joakim Sandberg, he has also made other works such as “Noitu Love 2: Devolution” and “The Legend of Princess” especially “Noitu Love 2: Devolution” which received positive remarks and criticisms from the game. This time, we are looking back at one of the modern contemporary classic games called “Iconoclasts,” delving deeper into the mysteries that exist without any boring aspect.

Robin just wants to be a mechanic and help people, but without a license, she’s a sinner in Mother’s eyes. Ever since picking up her wrench, the world has been going nuts and she’s wanted to bolt it back together. Now Penance is raining down on everyone she loves and One Concern agents are after her.

But something big is going on – bigger than droughts of Ivory fuel and personal conflicts – and Robin’s in the thick of it.

  • Hours of nut-twisting platform action-adventure
  • Numerous densely detailed locations filled with fine-tuned action and puzzles
  • 20+ gear-grinding, screen-filling boss battles stand in your way
  • Three game-changing difficulty settings supported by a unique tweak system
  • A heart-wrenching epic – can one mechanic fix the whole world?

Iconoclasts” is the masterwork of indie developer Joakim Sandberg, seven long years in the making. “Iconoclasts” delivers awesome action, hilarious hijinks and an emotional rollercoaster of deeply personal storytelling.

If you love “Hollow Knight” which is definitely one of the modern masterpieces of Metroidvania, I think you should try this game. This is a story of Robin, a young mechanic who mechanically knows the mysteries that exist from her own home. It’s misadventures that drag the main character to the adventure of being a superhero without anyone recognizing it. As you play as Robin, the players walk through various platforms and jump in order to be in one area to another. The main key in this game has is it’s the useful wrench you always need every time. The wrench is useful for opens a door, finishing a puzzle, protecting yourself from enemies projectile, and whatever it is. Not only that, you are also given with a gun which later you will find three kinds of the uniqueness of the gun itself. There is a gun that makes you teleport by directing it to an enemy or object so that it moves into other places, a bomb gun that can launch a rocket, and a beam gun which the main gun is also useful at all times.

The level is created in a unique way. Not only the player playing on land, you can also swim in the water. The world in this game can be spelled out so broadly even reaching a very wide world scope to be explored. Various kinds of puzzles or secret paths to find bonus items you will get in this game. Everything about the level and the world is like playing an open-world game with 2D side-scrolling action games. It’s so neatly designed, quite interesting, and pretty difficult on the puzzle that in fact, some gamers could get frustrated when trying to solve the puzzle. The enemy in each level depends on the environment you are exploring. Each level, you will fight the mini-boss or boss so you can continue the story. Each enemy has several weaknesses for each weapon and boss, you must learn various patterns so that you can carry out a truly effective mechanism.

Like Metroidvania games, the world of scope concerns this game is so broad. It’s not a usual thing that the players always unexpectedly gets lost even though the various pieces of the puzzle and maps will help your adventure. This is my typical video games that you can find a lot of interesting things, interesting puzzles, and interesting world with 2D side-scrolling stunning designs. However, some parts that you can never miss include the story while the gameplay is not comparable. It’s not about a superhero who saved the princess and the princess is in another castle. Sure, your typical NES games. The story is quite realistic because it takes the theme about politics, revolutionary, rebellion, trust, and socialization from one faction to another. Everything about this aspect always gives an unexpected twist. We are looking at this character with the crime but he is on us and vice versa. It’s about a world that is so dominated by a dictator who hides behind the shadows but in the power, there is a conflict which will drag the main character.

All characters in this game are so memorable both the protagonist and antagonist. There is some sequence where you will sacrifice one character that performs an important role in the story which I’ll not give it a name. It’s sad because you are going around to find out how to save him but the time is getting worse and it would not save the player. Every dialogue and narration in this game is very entertaining in various points of view of each character which sometimes makes you emotional. The experience that I’ve never forgotten from this game is indeed included in the aspect itself but the most important and the most animating atmosphere of this game is the soundtrack and the music. With its style and depending on the level that you explore, every time is so different but memorable with the typical chiptune music but a bit of 8-bit in certain parts and for the most part. It’s so familiar that everytime when you finish this game and hear the soundtrack again, you seem to become one into that world.

When you first play, surely you play in normal mode or maybe some of you will play hard mode. Normal mode is like normal mode. Nothing special and just normal. Hard mode is a hard, more difficult with just a little damage will cause a lot of hit points to the player. When you finish it, there is a challenge mode where you play in one-hit mode. When you are in one-hit, you repeat it from the beginning of the checkpoint without having to be damaged. There is some secret ending too if you want to investigate this game as deep as possible because there are some parts where you will be faced with two choices. Not just dialogue, but it’s in an active way too. This can affect how the situation or ending you get at the end of the game. Is it a bad ending, a neutral ending, or a good ending? You can search it on the internet or you can search for it by yourself.

4,5 Star

This is one of Joakim Sandberg’s most ambitious works. To sacrifice his time for seven years is not in vain to did just by himself but his efforts deserved to be appreciated. This is why I love about indie games which I’ve also reviewed previous indie games on this blog. Indie games are very different from games that people are always talked about yet it’s a shame that genres like this are not too popular especially in Indonesia. Honestly, this is one game that can get close to one of the most perfect without any minor problems that I found which might be but not for me. A high dedication if a genre like this will never die but will continue to exist. It has a memorable yet interesting character, great visual, the theme of the story is so interesting with quite heavy, a variety of features contained in weapons and enemies, an open-world 2D side-scrolling game, and of course, one of the Metroidvania games that are so appreciated by many communities especially fans of indie, classic, and Metroidvania games.
