Movie – The Departed [REVIEW] – Lies. Betrayal. Sacrifice. How Far Will You Take it?

IMDB Rating: 8,5/10
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Director: Martin Scorsese
Writer: William Monahan
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprioMatt DamonJack Nicholson

Martin Scorsese’s movies always have their own unique style and certainly make the audience carried along. This style always creates a thriller genre that’s different from the others. For The Departed, this movie received four Oscars in Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay, Best Achievement in Film Editing and one nomination in Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. This movie also invites a lot of famous actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, and many more. The story of the movie itself is a remake of a Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, starring Andy Lau, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, and Anthony Chau-Sang Wong. Infernal Affairs can also be said as the best crime movie ever made in Hong Kong but in here, we will discuss The Departed the remake version.

“The Departed,” tells about Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) is a big-time mobster in South Boston. He runs a lot of dirty business and he is very difficult to trace its existence. That’s because he sent a spy into the FBI and the spy was Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon). Sullivan was a policeman with a very strong discipline that his own boss had considered him a close friend but Sean Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) sometimes suspected him. Police who feel this hardly finally chose to send spies into Costello business and Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the person.

Jack Nicholson in The Departed (2006)

For me, The Departed is a light thriller movie that has a simple story and is very easy to understand the story. So, maybe for those of you who want to watch thriller movies that have an uncomplicated story like other thriller movies or Martin Scorsese’s other films, The Departed is a good start. This movie from the beginning didn’t have an impression that makes us boring because the beginning of the scene as well, we will be shown a silhouette figure of Jack Nicholson who trains a child to become his member. The character development is also very good here let alone there are many elements of misunderstanding here such as Leonardo DiCaprio character who is regarded as a scumbag police and Matt Damon is regarded as an accomplished police but in fact, he is a spy of Castello. This movie will build on the tension when entering the conflict where the police and the Castello suspect each other. We will see the characters that exist will mutually suspect and trace each other so that we just like carry on in this movie. However, from the beginning, I had a lot of hope if the ending of this movie would have a very striking plot-twist. The result is, that’s not what I think. Apart from that, this movie is a pure light thriller that is very nice to watch.

Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, and Joseph Oliveira in The Departed (2006)

Martin Scorsese is able to build the atmosphere of the story so that the audience will be made up and not feel bored. Moreover, a great acting of some famous actors in this movie is all great. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon who initially have their own stories and will meet as the story goes, Jack Nicholson is very brilliant performing in this movie, Mark Wahlberg who is not too dominate but perform maximally and get an Oscar nomination, and many of the legendary actors like Martin Sheen even though he is not too dominating in here. What I’m amazed about is, why did Jack Nicholson didn’t get an Oscar nomination at all? But I don’t know if this movie is better than the original version or vice versa because I’ve never seen Infernal Affairs but seen a little bit of footage on television.

Overall, The Departed is a light thriller that triggers the audience’s tension and is perfect for you to watch. With so many legendary actors, The Departed can’t sometimes be said to be the best crime movie but you will witness a lot of unpredictable events in this movie. Martin Scorsese’s movies always make me want to watch more thriller movies and I want to watch more of his movies.

Movie – Elysium [REVIEW] – A Man Takes On A Mission That Could Bring Equality To The Polarized Worlds

IMDB Rating: 6,6/10
Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Writer: Neill Blomkamp
Stars: Matt DamonJodie FosterSharlto Copley

Have you ever played Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare before? Or have you ever watched a movie with the same director with this movie District 9 before? If both of that thing you’ve done, maybe Elysium isn’t a movie that’s rare to hear any more. A film made by Neill Blomkamp may not be as good as District 9 which is also made by himself. But with the support of some great actors, Matt Damon and Jodie Foster can already prove that this movie will also have expectable results. The reality is like that but for myself, it seems very quickly bored if watching over and over again. But far from it, Elysium is a movie with a unique story and can predict how the earth portrays in the 22nd century.

“Elysium,” takes the time far away in 2154 where the earth has turned into a stretch of land due to the near extinction of plants. War, disease, and poverty were the most common on earth in that year. Elite people who have good wealth economically and socially decide to move to a colony in space named Elysium where this place is a residence of everybody’s dream and can live eternally there. While those who can’t afford to be willing to live on earth that has polluted with pollution and can only dream to live in Elysium sometime in the future. Max (Matt Damon) is an orphan who also has a dream to live there and promise to his orphaned friend named Frey (Alice Braga) to invite her someday. Time after time, Max then forget his dream. At the time he was working in a factory, Max was dying and made him not have much time to 5 days. The only way to cure himself is by going to Elysium and using an immortal capsule that can cure all sorts of diseases. Is Max able to survive within 5 days or is he just desperate?

Matt Damon in Matt Damon (2007)

Elysium does have a unique story. Moreover, this film predicts a state of the earth in the 22nd century that’s described as the earth is already damaged. If associated with the present time, there is a project that’s almost similar to this film that is a registration to a colony called Asgardia. Could it be, the half population of earth will be gone because some of that may be going to that colony. Elysium is a tangible proof depicting a world that will take place in the 22nd century where the laws of nature will prevail again. Wealth is everything and those who don’t have it will use the laws of nature as much as possible. However, one person must be able to get ahead in order to break that rule so little by little there will be many people who follow it.

Sharlto Copley in Elysium (2013)

The film also tends to have a fairly short storyline. The duration of the film is also not up to 2 hours. In fact, watching this movie may be somewhat dissatisfied with the duration isn’t up to two hours. In fact, the story in this film is very interesting to be followed by the support of actors who have different characteristics. All of that already has a requirement that this film can be said the best sci-fi movie of that year. In fact, the plot and the story of this film are not brought battle and hit to be witnessed. Apart from that, Elysium actually is a sci-fi movie that must be watched. Some scenes can be viewed in great detail from the scene of the fight, the action that tends to be brutal and the main character that feels tortured sometimes. However, the story of this movie is somehow forgotten so that if watching this movie for the second time may be boring.

Overall, Elysium is a sci-fi movie that must be watched by fans of science fiction movies because I also tend to be very fond of films that tell the technology, the future and so on. Although there are many shortcomings in it, Elysium can be a very interesting and entertaining spectacle to watch.

Movie – Saving Private Ryan [REVIEW] – The Mission Is A Man

IMDB Rating: 8,6/10
Genre: Drama, War
Director: Steven Spielberg
Writer: Robert Rodat
Stars: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore

We always wonder how the image of a war is? How bitter war is and how sadistic is? We don’t know that we are already living in this free period, especially when this time in which we have enjoyed the results of peace after the war. So in this film, we see a picture of a war. Saving Private Ryan is a movie made by Steven Spielberg who win 74 awards in this film. Includes from 5 Oscar awards such as Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing. We know that Steven Spielberg always draws the attention of his audience through the first impression. Like 15 minutes from the beginning of this film has made the audience didn’t look away when watching this movie. This is the real proof that Steven Spielberg is a highly overrated director but a genius.

“Saving Private Ryan,” set in World War II. After 3 of Ryan’s four brothers died on the battlefield at the same time, a mission had to be completed in order to save the one. Private Ryan (Matt Damon) is on the line when all of the soldiers didn’t know his status and his existence. Therefore, Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) and his soldier had to find Ryan’s and take him home.

Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Rolf Saxon, and Adam Shaw in Saving Private Ryan (1998)

If you only read by the synopsis is a bit difficult to understand and sounds unreasonable. But if you watching it, it makes any sense that you will turn out your perspective. The first impression made by Steven Spielberg has already made the audience tense. An incredible first opening of this movie begins when Spielberg shows how the atmosphere of Normandy landings. For less than 25 minutes, the audience didn’t turn looking away of this film. Of course, Spielberg knows about how to make the first impressions that look amazing. Using approximately 1,500 peoples makes this scene even more amazing. Although the film is not as good as Apocalypse Now which has a dark theme or Full Metal Jacket that has a psychological theme, Saving Private Ryan shows how bitter and how the horrible war is. From severe injuries to loss of limbs to the nervousness or fear they felt before and when the war began.

Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, and Edward Burns in Saving Private Ryan (1998)

This film certainly still has the story and meaning contained therein. Take it easy, this movie is perfect to watch all circles and the story is easy to understand. Despite that, Saving Private Ryan shows clearly the theme of a very dark war atmosphere. I just wonder if that war can solve everything? Is war the right thing to solve the problem? Or it can be paid just about everyone? This film shows how saving one’s life should receive enormous sacrifices. If indeed the war can solve the problem, so which one is right and which one is wrong? War always keeps people from raising passions from killing people. As if one of the soldiers had lost one of his best friends, the soldier was so eager to kill the man who had killed his best friend. This soldier seems to have come up with how that his enemy that killed his friend has committed a very big sin. But isn’t that the other way around?

This movie is a war movie, but there are so many moral messages in this movie. The moral message is also neatly arranged, though not so profound. However, this film is indeed more a picture of the war but never escape the moral message that exists. This film is also the debut of the first Hollywood actor of Vin Diesel who acted as Caparzo in this film. Although it only appears briefly, Vin Diesel has stepped into a Hollywood thanks to this movie. A film of how to show an ambiguous moral theme and war accompanied by dark horror, all that remains and always balanced.

Overall, the end of the movie is very predictable, but the process from the beginning to the end is very fun to watch. Ending in this movie is also no less interesting than its opening. This is the real proof of Steven Spielberg how he made a very exciting war movie and never lost the core of the story.

Movie – The Martian [REVIEW] – Bring Him Home

IMDB Rating: 8,0/10
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi
Director: Ridley Scott
Writer: Drew Goddard
Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig

What would happen if you lived on Mars with limited food or no food at all? Maybe, I’ll just give up rather than survive on Mars. But, this film says not. This film shows how a person is harvesting a potato on Mars. Why? It’s very impossible, but this movie will explain it.

“The Martian,” tells about a team of researchers facing a storm and required to go back to earth immediately. Suddenly, one person was stranded and left for allegedly dead. Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is an astronaut botanist who survived the storm and was forced to survive on Mars with limited inventory.

The main actor of this film is Matt Damon who plays as Mark Watney and directed by Ridley Scott. This film also features some famous actors such as Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Sean Bean. Initially, the book is written by Andy Weir who can be downloaded for free on his blog. However, someone asked to make its e-book and can be downloaded on Kindle.

I have never seen the trailer. I also originally heard of this movie from all of my friends. But they also recommended me to watch it. And this movie makes me feel excited with the visual effects and plot. Just like other space movies such as Gravity or Interstellar, this movie makes the audience more amazed and curious about what happens in this movie.

This movie teaches us that if you face some problems, it’s not to escape the problem. In fact, who can escape the problem if he is just a Martian? No one else? If you encounter some problems, don’t escape for whatever the problem is. Quite calm and be patiently is important.

Initially, I think will cause some bored with this film. However, during the duration of two hours more, this film is very dissatisfied with the duration of it. Ridley Scott is very clever to draw stories from one scene to another. If you really want to find a plot-twist in this movie, then this movie doesn’t present it. The Martian is a film that doesn’t give a special impression but is very interesting to watch.

This film also slipped small comedies inside. Like, Mark always makes videos while living on Mars. He always said some funny jokes. Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a 93% Tomato rating, while the IMDB rating was 8.0. From rating, you don’t need to hesitate to watch this movie.

Overall, I very recommended watching it. The beauty of visualization on Mars and also how NASA and outer space work is great. Especially, for Gravity movie fans, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moon, or Interstellar, I recommend this movie.
